A guy I follow, Drew Sanocki, exited his $200m ecommerce roll up.
"It was a good exit, not a great one ... Lots of lessons here. The biggest? Enjoy the journey as the outcome is never guaranteed."
How many times have you heard something like this? "It's about the journey, not the destination."
Seems like solid wisdom. But easy to forget & hard to put into practice.
I think I'm like most people: I enjoy the journey when it's going well. But if my plans are not working, things are breaking, failing, falling apart -- I'm usually having a bad time.
Enjoying when things are going well is easy.
Enjoying when things aren’t going well? That's hard.
But if the ride is all that’s guaranteed, you’re risking a lot by feeling down during all the inevitable hard times. So that's the best place to focus - learning how to appreciate the hard times.
Appreciating hard times doesn't mean denying reality. The problems are real. But try to enjoy it, the process of solving them.
WIP for me.
